Selecting a Pond Pump

There are two key issues in selecting a pond pump.

  1. First is the volume of water in your pond.
  2. Second is the pump head or pressure required.

For the first, it's relatively simple, ie. if your pond is 2 metres x 3 metres x .3m deep, we multiply 2 x 3 x .3 and the result is 1.8 cubic metres (or 1,800 litres). As the miniumun recommeded change of water is 2 x water volume, you need a pump to do at least 3,600 litres / hour.

The second is the pump head or pressure required. You may want to lift the pond water up 1.5m [measured from the water surface] and over your water feature or through a filter. This however has many variables and you may need to contact JDM Instant Pumps for advice.
